Description

Participants will learn how to see and engage with the desert landscape from multiple perspectives. Hangout for one of the best Events in Town.

Event Details

Listening to Land with Arizona State University humanities scholar Melissa Nelson (member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians), ASU acoustic ecologist Garth Paine, and ASU Natural History Museum biologist Elizabeth Makings.

Participants will learn how to see and engage with the desert landscape from multiple perspectives through narrative and embodied experience. Dr. Nelson will discuss indigenous narrative and ways of knowing, seeing, and interacting with the landscape. Paine will lead participants in exercises in listening—attuning to the acoustic ecology of a place—from urban sounds to those of animals and winds and even air. Makings will help us identify a range of desert plants and explain their growing patterns.

All participants will receive a copy of Desert Humanities professionally hand-crafted book Saguaro which brings together humanists, scientists, artists, and indigenous tribal members discussing this icon of the desert.

Class size limits (usually 25-30 people) designed to allow a positive and focused experience for the most people possible within the instructor’s capacities.

Saturday March 18, 7am-9am @ Papago Park, Hole in the Rock, 625 N Galvin Pkwy, Phoenix, AZ 85008

This event is part of the spring series for Desert Experiences with The Institute of Humanities Research (Ihr) Desert Humanities Initiative. Desert Humanities provides environmental experiences with the desert Southwest. Its premise is that we understand, appreciate, and care about our environment through physical engagement and cultural framing. Desert Humanities provides frames or ways of seeing, thinking, and feeling about the desert and offers opportunities to immerse in the landscape and its textured histories.
